Otherwise, an Instagram story is a photo or video that only lasts 24 hours before disappearing. And just like Snapchat Stories, they can be viewed multiple times, and can be viewed from newest to oldest. But unlike Snapchat Stories, you don't have to be friends with someone on Instagram to see their story. In fact, unless you make the effort to do so, the only people who will know you've seen your story are the people you follow who have also seen it.

While viewing an Instagram Story is as easy as tapping on it when it appears in your feed, previewing an Instagram Story before it goes live is a bit more difficult. Here is how to do it.

The first thing to do is to make sure that your phone is updated with the latest version of the Instagram app. To do so, open the App Store, tap the Updates tab, and tap Update next to the Instagram app.

Once you've done that, open the Instagram app and go to your profile page by tapping on the Profile icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then tap the three dots in the top right corner of your profile page and select Enable Post Notifications from the menu that appears.

Now that you've turned on post notifications for your own account, every time someone you follow posts a new story, you'll receive a notification. To preview someone's story before it's published, just tap the notification when it appears and the story will appear full screen, as if it's already published.

Note that while this method will allow you to see all stories that have been uploaded since you turned on post notifications, it won't work for stories that were uploaded before you turned them on. So if there's someone whose stories you really want to see as soon as they're published, turn on post notifications for them too.
