Toyota marks 25th anniversary of Sienna with special limited edition - Toyota Press Center USA (2023)

Plano, Texas (May 19, 2022)– The 2023 Toyota Sienna marks the first quarter of a century of success for this model and is celebrated with a special limited edition 25th anniversary edition. The special model builds on the sporty XSE grade, gains additional luxury cabin features from the Limited grade, and adds a unique exterior and interior. Toyota will build 2,525 of these models for the US, making it a must-have MPV.

Since its debut in 1997, the Toyota Sienna has sold more than 2.2 million units. Premiering in 2021, the fourth-generation Sienna is available exclusively as a hybrid, allowing customers to benefit from more than 20 years of Toyota's global leadership in hybrid vehicles and well-documented quality, durability and reliability. The 2023 Sienna achieved impressive results. Its Toyota Hybrid System II delivers a total of 245 system horsepower and gives the vehicle a manufacturer-estimated fuel economy of 36 MPG (front-wheel drive).

The hybrid-only strategy is a winner for the Sienna, the best-selling minivan in the U.S. in 2021, which occupies 35 percent of the segment. The next-generation Sienna offers a choice of front-wheel drive or on-demand electronic all-wheel drive, the latter of which uses an independent rear electric motor instead of a heavy, all-wheel-drive transfer case and takes up a lot of rear-wheel drive axle space. As a result, the EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 35 MPG is almost as good as the front-wheel drive's 36 MPG.

The special 25th anniversary edition of the XSE ultra-sport model is enhanced with an optional blacked-out 20-inch engine. XSE-exclusive twin 5-spoke wheels, bolder-looking front and rear bumpers, black-painted hoods and sport-tuned suspension. The Sienna 25th Anniversary Edition is available with front- or all-wheel drive and includes the XSE Plus package, which equips the Sienna 25th Anniversary Edition with roof racks, premium sound with JBL speakers and navigation, wireless charging and a 1500 W inverter.

The Sienna 25th Anniversary Special Edition comes in Sky Silver just for the occasion and is available in Air Cool Pearl as another color option. The two available exterior colors are highlighted by special black badging and exterior trim, including mirror caps and shark fin antennas.

Since then, a host of limited-edition features have been added to the celebratory model, including exterior mirrors with memory, auto-dimming, puddle lights, power folding and tilt-back. Inside, the Limited also gets black leather-trimmed seats with silver stitching, including heated and ventilated front seats with memory. A Limited memory steering column and second-row seats with ottomans enhance interior comfort, and illuminated door sills greet passengers. Special "25th Anniversary" footbeds care for your feet, and a unique black key ring with silver stitching features a "25th Anniversary" badge.

Sienna's journey

As minivans hit the market and gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, Toyota first imported the rear-wheel drive van, followed by the more market-friendly Previa. Meanwhile, Toyota was preparing a more focused product, which arrived in 1998: the Sienna.

The Sienna has proven to be perfect for the market and has evolved with each design generation to the perfection of a family car. Here's how he got there.

First generation: 1998-2003
The 1998 Sienna was designed exclusively for the US market and assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky in Georgetown, Kentucky. Toyota called the first Sienna the "Camry of minivans," and for good reason. First, it's based on a scaled-up version of the Camry's front-wheel-drive platform, providing an excellent balance of handling agility and ride comfort. In addition, the Sienna is designed to offer customers the same combination of quality, easy handling and value that made the Camry so popular.

With a length of 193.5 inches and a wheelbase of 114 inches, the first generation Sienna was easy to maneuver and park. The powertrain is paired with a 194-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine and a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. EPA-estimated 17 MPG city / 23 MPG highway / 19 MPG combined fuel economy ratings for the 1998-2003 Sienna.

The Sienna is available in a choice of 7- or 8-seat configurations and offers familiar Toyota value in CE, LE and XLE grades. A sliding driver-side tailgate is standard on the LE and XLE, optional on the CE, and the XLE offers optional leather-trimmed seats.

Toyota has designed the first Sienna with the safety that family van buyers are looking for. Anti-lock brakes were standard, and the Sienna was one of the few wagons at the time to have front-seat side torso airbags and vehicle stability control. The first-generation Sienna received top ratings ("Good") in all six IIHS frontal crash tests.

Second generation: 2004-2010

Customers loved the first generation Sienna so much that they wanted more... more space, more versatility, more power and more safety. The second-generation 2004 Sienna excels in every way. The new model's chief engineer, Yuji Yokoya, and his family drove the first-generation Sienna across North America and met with minivan owners to better understand how they use the vehicles in their daily lives. Under the influence of this investment, the second generation Sienna launched in 2004 has grown significantly, offering more space and versatility. The wheelbase and length have increased by 5 inches, and the new Sienna is also 4 inches wider and 1.6 inches taller than the first-generation model.

The second-generation Sienna debuted with the option of all-wheel drive, and for years the Sienna remained the only minivan to offer all-wheel drive. All models are powered by a 230-horsepower 3.3-liter V6 engine mated to a new 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Fuel economy ratings improve to an EPA-estimated 17/25/20 MPG on front-wheel drive models.

The seating area and trunk have been increased. Namely, since the minivan is often used for trips to warehouses, the Sienna can now easily carry a 4-by-8-foot piece of plywood. The second-generation Sienna is presented in the new luxurious Limited trim. And, recognizing the value of passenger entertainment, Toyota offers an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system with two 110V outlets.

In the safety category, side curtain airbags (optional on some 2004 through 2005 models) became standard on all 2006 models. Vehicle stability control became standard on all models in 2008. Constant development brings new features such as Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone use and music streaming, power folding third row, rear camera, rear parking sensors and navigation. In 2007, the Sienna was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 266 horsepower.

Third generation: 2011-2019

The third generation Sienna, launched in 2011, introduced a bolder design as well as an increasing number of luxury and technological features. The design was created at Toyota's CALTY studio, with engineering at Toyota's technical center in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Japan. The new model is the same size as the second generation Sienna, adding versatility.

A new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine came as standard, but was discontinued two years later. It continues with a 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. For 2018, output jumps to 296 horsepower thanks to the addition of Toyota's D4-S direct fuel injection technology, and an eight-speed automatic replaces the six-speed transmission. EPA fuel economy estimates for this combination are 18 city/24 highway/20 combined.

Standard features include tri-zone climate control, three power outlets, power door locks and remote keyless entry. A pleasant surprise, the new SE version adds something of a sports sedan to the driving experience. The front part is bolder, the side moldings visually reduce the height of the vehicle, and the darkened rear lights give it a distinctive character. Specially tuned suspension, revised steering and 19-inch alloy wheels increase agility and driver engagement. This is a minivan with attitude.

The third-generation Sienna received major advances in active safety for 2015, with optional pre-collision systems and dynamic radar cruise control. Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) comes standard on all models in 2018. TSS-P includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning system with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control and automatic high beams.

Other safety features include a 180-degree rear view camera, driver's knee airbag and Toyota Safety Connect. In terms of luxury and user technology, the Smart Key system with push-button start adds new conveniences, and the available sliding second-row saloon seats move back 23 inches to open up massive legroom.

The Sienna's Entune 3.0 multimedia system includes real-time traffic maps, while multiple trims also offer Wi-Fi connectivity for up to five devices. The optional 11.6-inch rear seat entertainment system with dual view really pleases the passengers.

Fourth generation: 2020-

Toyota has redesigned the fourth-generation Sienna to support a wider range of life stages and activities than typical minivans. This includes responding to requests for more luxury, multimedia and exterior features.

The fourth-generation Sienna is assembled in the United States, and designed jointly by CALTY in its Newport Beach, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan studios. Built on an all-new minivan architecture based on Toyota's versatile TNGA-K platform architecture, its evocative design is influenced by the bold, rugged character of an SUV.

The Sienna delivers a confident, agile ride with exemplary ride comfort, thanks in no small part to the combination of the TNGA-K platform and rear multilink rear suspension. Wheels on the sportier XSE and luxury Platinum standards come with 20-inch aluminum wheels with P235/50R20 front tires. (All-wheel-drive versions come with 18-inch wheels.)

The 2023 Sienna lineup includes the LE, XLE, sporty XSE, outdoor-oriented Woodland Edition, luxurious Limited and ultra-luxurious Platinum trims. Introduced in 2022, the Woodland Edition combines rugged adventure-inspired styling, standard electronic on-demand all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance to take family fun further.

The 2023 Sienna offers a number of premium features available across the model line (depending on model grade), such as sliding side and rear doors that open and close, four-zone climate control, heated extra-long second-row sliding captain's chairs with legs Chair, Power Tilt and telescoping steering column with heated steering wheel, 10-in. Color head-up display and JBL® Premium audio system with 12 speakers.

All 2023 Sienna models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0), a comprehensive active safety system that includes:

The Sienna LE and select XLE models are available in an 8-passenger configuration with a stowable center seat. Extra-long second-row captain's chairs with rails in some 7-passenger models slide up to 25 inches, providing ample legroom and flexibility for maximum comfort, especially when used in conjunction with the available footrest. State-of-the-art visibility technology and a surround-view monitor with perimeter scanning provide a real-time 360-degree view to help drivers see potential obstacles more easily.

The 2023 Sienna offers plenty of connectivity and entertainment, and Toyota's versatile audio system offers something for everyone. The base Toyota audio system in the LE trim level is feature-rich, including nine-inch speakers. Touch screen, six speakers, Android Auto™, compatibility with Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa, seven USB media ports, hands-free calling and music streaming via Bluetooth® wireless technology, SiriusXM® (with a 3-month trial subscription to platinum plan) and Connect® security with a 1-year trial and up to 3GB of Wi-Fi during the 1-month trial.
